What Are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids, also known as n-3 fatty acids, are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). These are healthy fats considered "essential" because we require them for survival and optimal health but our body cannot make them.
These fats are found in a variety of foods, such as tuna, halibut, salmon, several varieties of seafood and shellfish, such as krill. They are also found in algae, some plant foods, and several nut oils.
Animal sources of omega-3 provide DHA and EPA fatty acids. Plant sources provide ALA. Of the three, DHA is considered the most important.[1]
